The Shopkeepers Going Places Guide to Germantown

A Visit to Germantown

Germantown is located about two hours north of New York City in the Hudson Valley. Surrounded by rolling hills, farms and views of the Hudson River, the charming hamlet of Germantown is a thriving hub of commerce. Each shop is a unique gem, within steps of each other, making a visit to these shops followed by dinner at the local restaurant, Gaskins, one of my favorite weekend destinations. There is much to visit and explore in the surrounding area. Olana Historic Site, the former home of Hudson River artist Frederic Church, whose idiosyncratic mix of Victorian and Middle-Eastern architectural and decorative styles is like something out of Harry Potter, has beautiful walks and stunning views. Clermont Historic Park and Poets’ Walk Park are two other favorite places for walks. The Frank Gehry designed Fisher Center of performing arts at Bard has a full roster of interesting events for all. Nestled between the towns of Hudson to the north and Rhinebeck to the south, each about thirty minutes away, I highly recommend including a trip to Germantown if you’re visiting the region.
