WHAT WE LOVE

Kitchen Arts & Books, established in 1983 is a bookstore specializing in books on food and drink. Located on Manhattan's Upper East Side in the Carnegie Hill neighborhood, the store offers c ookbooks, cocktail books, books on food history and culture, and food-centric memoirs. Founder Nach Waxman traded his career in book publishing to open Kitchen Arts & Letters and counts Julia Child, James Beard, and Laurie Colwin as early customers. Today the bookshop is popular with everyone from Michelin-starred chefs from around the world to local home cooks.

Nach Waxman was a member of the James Beard Foundation’s Hall of Fame. After Nach's passing in 2021, Matt Sarwell who joined Kitchen Arts & Letters in 1991 took over the reins. A former book editor and chair of the book committee of the James Beard Awards, Matt Sartwell works alongside a very-well qualified food-industry-expert team.

Kitchen Arts & Letters hosts a full calendar of book events and signings - in store, online and off-site at venues such as Union Square's Green Market. They also carry out-of-print books and offer a service to source books.

"Julia Child, James Beard, and Laurie Colwin were among our early customers. Ever since we have been helping people who are serious about food–or who are getting curious–find books they want, need, and will enjoy."
