Walking into Watertiger is like stepping into a Turkish bazaar, wandering down a narrow hutong in Beijing’s back streets or discovering an oasis full of treasures in Bali. Kathrin Bruce lived and worked in Asia for more than twenty years. She originally moved there from Australia to design and manufacture children’s clothes for Walt Disney and Warner Bros., and became fascinated by the heritage and crafts of the countries where she travelled. After twelve years spent sourcing and wholesaling antique and vintage furniture and home goods that she sold to retailers and interior designers in Australia, Kathy decided it was time to open her own shop. Eight months ago she opened Watertiger in Waterloo, named after her Chinese astrological sign. With an established reputation in the industry for sourcing unique exotic, one off pieces, Kathy was delighted to be finally meeting her end buyers personally. Social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram, and her website have helped create a loyal following that grows daily, and her pieces are destined for homes all over Australia. As a busy single mother to three boys, and a retail and wholesale business owner, she relishes some quiet time mid afternoon before her sons arrive home from school. She loves to travel, searching for treasures in markets in India, Turkey, China and Indonesia. In the future she hopes to expand her search area and visit the famed markets of Morocco and Tunisia so she can add to the treasure trove of beautiful pieces that she sells at Water Tiger.
