WHAT WE LOVE

A welcoming, loft-like space filled with covetable plants, homewares, and vintage goods. The stunning long, marble-topped counter serves as a central gathering place for gift-wrapping or serving champagne. Established in 2018 by Richmond native Audie McDougall in Downtown Richmond’s historic arts district.

"The internet makes the world so small. I love the fact that we can make connections and be inspired by shop owners, collectors, stylists, chefs and other like-minded people all around the world."

THE SHOP

Why did you choose the name Someday?  I wanted a name that was very open ended. I see the shop as a living entity and didn’t want to pigeonhole myself with a very specific name. The naming process took a long time and through conversations with friends and family ‘Someday’ kept coming up. The idea of “someday’ is a little romantic and reminds me to continue to move forward and push through tough times towards a better future for myself and my family.

What are Someday’s best selling items?  Quirky vintage with a French feel, tropical plants and eco friendly household items.

Where do you source products for Someday?   Our product is sourced from all over but is always sustainable and eco friendly. For our vintage we look for items that speak to us and tell a story. Last fall we were fortunate enough to find some beautiful French Copper pots and antique damask linens with the help of our friends from Marston House. We are constantly on the hunt for unique products and opportunities to partner with like minded brands to bring something interesting to our Richmond customers.

How has the internet impacted your business?  The internet makes the world so small. I love the fact that we can make connections and be inspired by shop owners, collectors, stylists, chefs and other like-minded people all around the world.

THE SHOPKEEPER

Who inspires you?  My family. If you’ve been to Someday there’s a good chance my dad was here giving you tips on how to bring your neglected plants back to life, my mom is usually found with a broom in her hand and and my sister would be the one pouring you a glass of champagne while ringing you up. All of this is usually going down while a noisy two-year-old plays with a vintage train in the back of the shop.

What inspires you?  Traveling.

Before I was a shopkeeper, I….   ran retail for a startup menswear company. When I had my son in 2017, it was a perfect time to start out on my own with more freedom and a passion for what I was doing.

Did you have prior retail experience?   I have always worked in retail. I fell into it in high school working at Nordstrom and went on to work and manage at Anthropologie for about six years. From there I returned to my home state to work for a local menswear company running their retail operation for the last five years before opening Someday.

Your favorite thing about owning an independent shop?  I love the fact that I get to pour myself into creative projects of my choosing and give a voice and platform to other creative people doing similar work.

If you weren’t a shopkeeper you would be..?  An event planner. I love to throw a party.

What is your perfect day off in Richmond? My essential Richmond day would have to start with a turmeric tea and a fig and cheese pastry at Sub Rosa in Church Hill. Around the corner my good friend, Kristy owns a beautiful and inspiring lifestyle boutique, Dear Neighbor and I love spending way too much time (and money) with her. From there I’d head to Pho Tay Do over in the west end. It’s the best little hole in the wall Pho place complete with quirky murals and the most amazing papaya salad. After lunch a walk down Addison Street to visit more shopkeeper friends like The Wild Heart  shop and  Na Nin . For cocktails and dinner, I’d have to visit my husband’s restaurant Brenner Pass . Maybe I’m a little biased but I think it’s the best food, service, and greatest looking restaurant in the city.

What are your favorite shops?  Dear Neighbor , Rosewood and Na nin  are my favorite local Richmond shops because of their beautiful selection but also the wonderful shopkeepers who maintain them.  Although I have not visited I lust over the aesthetic of both Casa Gonzalez & Gonzalez and Boston General Store and hope to visit both someday. For now, I’ll stalk their instagrams for inspiration.

ON THE FUTURE OF RETAIL

"You can’t free 2 day ship an experience so that’s what we work to cultivate in our store. Creating unique places, connections and experiences that you can’t get elsewhere is what’s going to make brick and mortar stick around."
