WHAT WE LOVE

A men's and womenswear shop showcasing a carefully edited selection of timeless classics with a relaxed, easy-going attitude. Dick's offering is casual chic with an understated luxury shining through – from the clothing to the lovely minimal interior and the carefully selected assortment of accessories and homewares. Located in Edinburgh’s beautiful and elegant Stockbridge neighborhood Dick's was founded in 2012 by husband-and-wife team, interiors photographer Uli Schade and former Guardian editor, Andrew Dick. Uli and Andrew share a passion for beautifully-made goods as evident at Dick's that celebrates small, independent manufacturers, both old and new.

"The people who make the products we stock are an inspiring group of people who really care about what they do."

THE SHOP

What are Dick’s “must-have” items? Scottish knitwear, handmade Mackintosh raincoats, Begg & Co cashmere scarves.

Where do you source products for Dick’s? A lot of time is spent discovering the best made products we can find.

Who are Dick’s customers? A small but wide group of people from a number of different backgrounds who all appreciate beautiful well-made things.

How has the internet impacted your business? We have a worldwide following which we never really anticipated.

Have you adapted your business to the coronavirus pandemic? We always knew our webshop would be key but never anticipated it being our only sales channel so our investment in it has really paid off.

THE SHOPKEEPERS

Who inspires you? The people who make the products we stock are an inspiring group of people who really care about what they do.

What inspires you? Beautiful well-made things. If we’re not buying them for the shop we’re buying them for us.

Before we were shopkeepers…. Uli is a photographer. Andrew worked for the Guardian newspaper.

Your favorite thing about owning an independent shop? Being true to our vision.

Your advice for anyone wanting to open a shop? Be prepared!

If you weren’t a shopkeeper you would be..? Less tired!

What are your favorite local independent businesses?   Smith & Gertrude, Valvona & Crolla.

ON THE FUTURE OF RETAIL

"Hopefully there will always be a small niche for specialised businesses."
