A Baker’s Dozen

There is nothing better than the smell of freshly baked bread and coffee in the morning. We love delicious, well-baked bread so are sharing A Baker’s Dozen – 13 of our favorite bakeries. I could happily live on bread and cheese in France, famous for their baguettes and buttery croissants. And it was living in France that I fell in love with Poilâne’s tasty sourdough loaves. The popularity of pain Poilâne has resulted in their opening three additional Paris shops to join the original bakery on rue du Cherche-Midi, and a shop in London’s Belgravia. Other must-visit Paris bakeries are Circus Bakery and Du Pain et Des Idées.

When visiting the U.K we recommend Pavillion that has three shops in London and one in the seaside town of Newquay. And be sure to check out the Pavillion’s Sri Lankan breakfast. Flint Owl Bakery in the charming town of Lewes uses organic ingredients for their small batch baked goods and breads. Swedish bakery Fabrique that uses traditional methods to make their artisanal breads and pastries have shops in Stockholm, London and New York.

San Francisco trained, Irish chefs turned bakers, create the most delicious handcrafted sourdough breads and Viennoiserie. Be sure to sample their delicious wares when visiting Dublin.

Back stateside, in New York, we love Sullivan Street Bakery and in particular their tomato focaccia. Also on our list of favorite bakeries is Brooklyn’s Bien Cuit and Soho’s iconic Vesuvio Bakery, that reopened earlier this year after a hiatus. In the Boston area Tatte boasts sixteen beautiful bake shops and one in Washington DC with a second location opening soon. On the west coast the wonderful Tartine has locations in the Bay Area and Los Angeles and their bread ships nationwide. Whenever we are in LA we always enjoy a visit to Gjusta bakery and a visit to their neighboring homewares shop Gjusta Goods.
