Cheese shops and grocery stores, bakeries and butchers, are some of the delicious featured independent food shops. Many of the best food shops showcase local food suppliers and makers.

In the U.K. this year’s best food shops include The Hairy Fig, a fine food emporium in the charming walled Roman city of York in northeast England. With five shops in Scotland I.J. Mellis are purveyors of farmhouse and artisan cheeses. Emmett’s Store, established in 1820, is the oldest artisan ham and bacon producer in the UK. The London Borough of Jam is a speciality shop offering small-batch handmade jam in interesting flavors. Charming grocery and food shop, Leila’s Shop, with a neighboring cafe has a produce table filled with locally-sourced produce, shelves are stacked with delicious pantry items, as well as offering artisan breads and cheese. A Portuguese Love Affair, deli, café, wine and gift shop, showcases the best of food, goods and produce from Portugal.

In France, Poilâne, a Parisian bakery has been making its distinctive wood-oven baked sourdough since 1932. A third-generation family run bakery with four locations in Paris and one in London’s Belgravia.

Stateside, in Hudson, NY, Talbott & Arding, a cheese and provisions shop that showcases local produce and prepared food moved to a new larger store to provide even more delicious offerings. Established in 1923 Albanese Meats & Poultry in New York City is a testament to the heritage of the Little Italy neighborhood. Curio Spice Co in Cambridge, Massachusetts, specializes in directly sourced, sustainably produced spices from around the world.
