2019 Best Bookshops

Introducing 2019 Best Bookshops. It’s so wonderful to see so many independent bookshops around the world. And in this age of ecommerce so many independent bookshops continue to thrive and grow. The 2019 Best Bookshops list includes bookstores in London, Paris and New York as well as Cambridge, Dublin and Edinburgh.

McNally Jackson, now with three locations in NYC and a lobby shop at The Shed art center, as well as a cafe at their Soho shop. Brooklyn’s Books are Magic with it’s iconic pink mural. Persephone Books, featured in our London Bloomsbury going places guide is a champion of fiction and non-fiction by mid-twentieth century (mostly) women writers. Their editions are beautifully presented in grey jackets with printed endpapers with matching bookmarks. One of Venice’s treasures, Alta Acqua Libreria keeps its collection of books in waterproof containers, bathtubs and even a gondola to protect them from Venice’s high-tides. Despite these measures this bookshop was flooded last year. The Lilliput Press, Dublin bookshop and publisher specializes in Irish interest books. The Lilliput Press is located in Dublin’s Stoneybatter neighborhood. Founded in 1953 City Lights Books is a landmark independent bookstore and publisher that specializes in world literature, the arts, and progressive politics. Located in a landmark building in the heart of London Maison Assouline is a beautiful space and bookshop. Maison Assouline publishes stunning coffee table editions with a focus on luxury, fashion and design. Golden Hare Books, one of our favorite Edinburgh Shops, is a beautifully designed bookshop that presents most of its books outward-facing. Established in 1932 Harvard Book Store located across the street from the famous university. The book shop at the art museum Halle Saint Pierre has the most wonderful soaring ceilings and offers presentations and installations alongside its selection of art books.
